Anthony Cordell’s game-saving, seventh-inning catch in Ozark’s 7-6 win last week against Springdale Har Ber shed a light on his ever-improving defense in center field.
He’s emerged as a top-notch glove man, chasing down liners and bloopers in front of him and tracking down would-be doubles and triples hit behind him and in the gaps. One would never even take a guess this is Cordell’s foray as a center fielder.
Cordell and Trey Burton switched outfield spots at the beginning of the spring.
“I was in left field (last) summer and Trey was in center,” Cordell said. “Coach (Justin Sundlie) told me he thought he needed me in center, ‘with your speed and the way you lay out for things.’”
Sundlie has since gained a strong appreciation for Cordell’s instincts and desire to track down anything hit in the air.
“One of the things that makes Anthony so good out there is his lack of hesitation,” Sundlie said. “Pretty much every ball that is hit out there he thinks he can get to.
