Ozark’s Bria Wright showed at the Christian County Relays on Friday the kind of versatility she hopes will allow her to shine in the heptathlon at Wichita State.
Wright was a three-time winner, sweeping the 100 hurdles (15.26) and 300 hurdles (45.73), taking first in the long jump (17-9 1/2) and placing second in the 200 (26.34).
Upon signing a letter of intent with Wichita State, she revealed the Shockers recruited her as a heptathlete. Events in the heptathlon include the 100 hurdles, long jump, 200, high jump, shot put, javelin and 800.
“I tried (a heptathlon) over the summer and think it’s something I can excel in,” Wright said. “A lot of the events I’ve done in my four years of high school. My shot put needs some work. But I’ve been told it’s easy to learn once you commit to it. I’m more excited than nervous.”
When Wichita State coaches approached her with the idea of trying the heptathlon, Wright didn’t hesitate to agree with the idea.
“I was totally down to do it,” she said. “I think they like me in it because I’m 5-foot-10 and all the events I’ve done. We think that could be the best outcome for me.”
