Riley Franklin will no longer be part of any discussion of who is the best SWMO golfer never to win a MSHSAA-sponsored tournament.
Franklin captured medalist honors for the first time in his Ozark career by a hefty five-stroke margin by winning the Ozark Tournament at Fremont Hills County Club on Thursday.
He shot a seven-under 64.
Franklin, a junior, wasn’t overly concerned about when he would claim his first tournament championship
“I know my game's good enough, so I didn't worry about it that much,” Franklin said. “I’ve played good (in tournaments), but not how I know I can play.”
It’s no surprise Franklin’s first title came at Fremont, where the Tigers practice. Earlier this spring, he tied the course record by carding a 60.
“I think I know it better than anybody,” Franklin said. “I play out here all the time. This course is not super long and you can get around easily if you know it. I feel like if you know this course, it’s a big advantage.”
Fremont will also host the COC Tournament on April 30.
Franklin entered this year with momentum on his side, following his first-place finish at the American Junior Golf Association’s Bass Pro Shops Payne Stewart Junior Championship at Buffalo Ridge Golf Course in Hollister last August.
“That was super special,” Franklin said. “Buffalo Ridge is my favorite of (the Big Cedar) courses.”
